So here it is, JackTown’s own Grand Imperial, Gensu Dean has finally dropped his first full length LP with Mello Music Group entitled Lo-Fi Fingahz. The LP is already album of the year by real hip hop’s standards. Real hip hop DOES exist and you can’t deny it from the start of the intro to the last “Special Guest” shout out on the final track. I really don’t see any producer topping this beat package, arrangement or choice of guest spotlights for quite some time. The LP is laced from top to bottom with mouth-watering interludes (remember those?) reminiscent of a modern-day The Main Ingredient (Pete Rock). On Lo-Fi Fingahz, you can hear SP1200 tracks ripped by the likes of Prince Po, Roc Marciano, David Banner, Brand Nubian, Headkrack, Melatone and yours truly, along with a list of other that you have to discover for yourself. The album is available now on iTunes, and I highly suggest that you get yours! Peep the cover and click it for the link.
This is a proud weekend for Vintage Noize artist and Jacktown native, James Crow. The debut LP entitled The Black Codes, drops this Saturday, November 12th (Won Won Won Too Won Won)! This also will mark Crow’s birthday, so there will be an album release/ birthday party held at Suite 106, located at 106 Wilmington St. in JXN, MS. The Black Codes is packed full of influences from boom bap, to Blue Note jazz, black empowerment, and even extreme satire. But with it all, the message of the album is quite clear. Backed entirely by beats from his younger brother and fellow emcee, 5th Child (Vintage Noize/ReFRESH Records), the sound that this album creates makes underground hip hop extremely unfair for half-steppers.
In celebration of James Crow’s upcoming album release, we’re gonna slide you a freebee for download. The title song, “The Black Codes” is sho’ nuff to make you wanna fight for something better and revolt against whatever oppressors may be trying to hold you back. BUMP this joint HARD and cop the full Black Codes LP THIS SATURDAY, November 12th @ jamescrow.bandcamp.com -Vintage Noize
There aren’t too many artists that keep real music so alive and well heard. One of THE coolest cats you’ll ever meet, Stones Throw artist, DâM-FunK (Pasadena/L.A., CA) continues to take us with him on a fantastic musical voyage to the realm of Funk, and his choice modes of transportation are his beloved keytar and synthesizers. In this video for “Forever”, he also brings along his band, Master Blazter to to help steer us in the right direction. This song is a part of DâM-FunK’s new 4 track 10-inch EP, InnaFocusedDaze (Scion A/V), which will be given away during his October 2011 tour. “All music & vocals recorded Mon., Aug. 22, 2011, around 3 a.m. in Ladera Heights (Westside L.A.) CA by DâM-FunK.” -Stones Throw. I can always appreciate DâM-FunK’s G-like approach to laying his vocals. With this track & video being laced with spaceships, analogue synth bass (Computer Jay), drums (J1), and outer-worldly keys, anyone who knows me KNOWS this is my type of sh*t.
Hands down,… NOBODY can rock with Mississippi when it comes to GOOD and SOULFUL hip hop. PERIOD. There is an raw honesty to the pain, anger, and concentrated energy that Mississippians draw from when creating art and music. We have a voice that, once given a chance to be heard, can shake the whole game up. The words and visuals that Big K.R.I.T. put together for “The Vent” allow me to rest my case.
I don’t even have to write anything to explain how awesome this is.
The 2011 Nike MAG shoes have arrived. 1500 of the famous, LED-electroluminescent shoes are being auctioned on eBay, Sept 8th – Sept 18th. All net proceeds from the auction sales will go directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. I hate to see Michael J. Fox suffer from Parkinson’s, but I’m glad that he is around to be able to introduce this product and for a worthy cause!
I’m extremely proud to say that I gets down with THESE cats. Some of the greatest out of DFW hip hop, Bodega Brovas are a festive trio emcees: Headkrack, Travii and Key Note. I’m seeing a lot of familiar faces in the vid too. I was doing a show in JXN that weekend, I believe, so I missed out. The song and video possess very nice quality that continues to set the standard high for any artist looking to gain exposure around these parts! Very well done, guys!
